Portpatrick is one of the most popular seaside villages in SW Scotland and often referred to as ‘The Jewel in the Crown’ of Dumfries & Galloway.  It’s origins go back some 500 years.  Evidence of this remains in the form of the circular tower and the Old Parish Church which can be found in the village, whilst high up on the cliff-tops sit the remains of Dunskey Castle – all dating back to the 1500′s.

Once the main link to Ireland and Dumfries, the village is now most renowned for it’s link with the Southern Upland Way – Scotland’s 212 mile coast to coast footpath - one end of which can be found at the North side of the inner harbour.  New for 2012 is a Historic Audio Walk around the village – the first of it’s type – which makes for a very interesting few hours, taking in the memorial to the ‘Princess Victoria’ which sank during a winter storm in 1933 with the loss of 133 lives.

With it’s colourful buildings and a wide selection of places to eat, Portpatrick is an ideal place to enjoy a relaxing lunch in the sunshine overlooking the harbour and the small sandy beach.  The village is home to a number of gift shops, pubs, restaurants and a small supermarket and post office.

Energetic visitors can enjoy a game of tennis, crown green bowls, putting, fishing, cliff-top walks or even chartered fishing trips or scenic boat trips along the local coastline.  For walkers there is a circular route along the first / last section of the Southern Upland Way from the cottages taking in country lanes, clifftops and hidden bays.

Throughout the year the village plays host to a number of annual events including Lifeboat Week (29th July – 4th August 2012) and Portpatrick Folk Festival (31st August – 2nd September 2012).

The harbour itself is home to a range of wildlife - including black guillemots - which return to the village every year to nest in the harbour walls.
